ArcTeryx Needle 45 Backpack Review
My current favorite 40L backpack is ArcTeryx Needle 45: http://arcteryx.com/product.aspx?Needle-45

If you get one make sure to go and try it on your back - it's essential because this pack has a roll-top closure (like a dry sack) and you don't want your head to bump into the top of the pack. I went with SMALL size and it fits my back like a glove - I can freely move my head without bumping into the top. Things I like about this pack: - tough constructions - I trust it completely - roll-top closure is very secure and easy to operate - roll-top opening is huge - it allows you to easily organize your gear - streamlined design - stands up to it's name - NEEDLE - compresses nicely even when almost empty - hip-belt is not too bulky yet very supportive and comfortable - ditto for the shoulder straps - Accordion front pocket fits my rain gear nicely - WaterTight Zippers - top pocket is huge yet not bulky - did I say it's TOUGH? - made in Canada Originally I didn't like that Needle-45 didn't come with side bottle holders but after I've used it with nalgene's bottle holder that fits nicely over the hip belt with a second bottle stashed in the pack I can now say that I like this setup very much. Not having water bottle holders on each side of the pack makes it much more streamlined allowing you to get in tight spaces easier.

Needle is the middle

Here I have a camera shoulder-bag slung over it:

(Below) I attached Nalgene bottle to the compression strap of the hip belt - it worked much better this way:
