I am a huge fan of Man vs Wild show on Discovery channel. I've always wondered two things - what are the water bottle and knife Bear Grylls uses when filming his survival episodes. The water bottle research is here: Canteen with a metal Cup Finally I was able to find the answer to the "knife" question - apparently I am not the only one interested in this and it looks like Bear Grylls didn't really like any knifes he's used so far so he paired with Robert Bayley who is a knife maker to create his own version of survival knife, a knife that follows my fundamental rule for selecting tools - Form Follows Function:

Bear's Blog: bear's knife.... http://www.bayleyknife.com/ I specifically like the one-piece "solder-less" guard that is made to be flush with the handle scales for a tight fit reducing possibility for scales to come loose and for making maintenance easier. In fact this is the first thing I noticed about this knife. I hope that they do a better job in marketing this baby as I would really like to get my hands on it really soon. As it stands now bayleyknife.com does a really bad job at this. UPDATE: As of Dec-12-2007 bayleyknife.com has done a great job marketing this knife - they rank #1 on Google's search for Bear Grylls Knife. But here's the big _BUT_ the price is simply not reasonable in comparison to what you can get here in US. The list price is 350GBP which translates to 715.130 USD! I really like this knife but it's not worth this much money to me. I personally opted to get Fallkniven F1 Survival Knife (see picture below)

Here's a discussion on what knifes Bear Grylls used and on what episode of MvW: http://www.lifesongadventures.com/newsletter/?p=44 A funny fact! Did you know that Will Ferrell joined Bear Grylls for the latest "Man vs Wild" show in Arctic, specifically in Northern Sweden! Will Ferrell joins Bear Grylls on "Man vs Wild"!

the bottle is standard british army '58 pattern issue. The cup shown in the photo is made from plasic so you will have to buy a metal one separately for cooking
